There are a number of tour providers in Yerevan that provide taxi and bus service directly to the monastery or tram station and back. If you prefer to find your way to Tatev on your own, you can take a marshutka or shared taxi to Goris, and from there find a taxi directly to Tatev. Beginning at the monastery, one passes through the entirety of Tatev Village before climbing up neighboring mountains and viewing a stunning panorama of the Vorotan Gorge, before descending into the valley through a lush forest. Please stop at the Tatev Tourist Information Center to pick up a map of the trail before you begin. The trail is over 13 km long, and takes 5-6 hours to walk. It is possible to arrange taxi pick-up from Harjis in advance, or to find local Harjis families that would be willing to accommodate you for the night. The complex was built mainly in the 17th century, and many of the buildings have been restored, including the main building, the church of St. Astvatzadzin. The monastery was constructed in the gorge due to the presence of spring water. The Info Center is happy to connect you with local guides who know the trails extremely well, and who can help choose routes that fit your needs as a hiker. The walk down to the monastery takes about an hour and a half, and after that it is possible to walk along the river towards Devil's Bridge where you can get a ride back up to Tatev Village.
